Brevo's free plan (300 emails/day, unlimited contacts) is the best for large lists, since it doesn't charge per contact. MailerLite (free to 1,000 subscribers) and Kit (free to 10,000 subscribers) are excellent free options for small lists and creators respectively.

Brevo is the standout — it bills by emails sent rather than by number of contacts, so you can store a large list and pay only for volume. This is the single biggest reason people leave Mailchimp.

For large but rarely-emailed lists, Brevo is cheapest because of its send-based pricing. For small lists, MailerLite and the free tiers of Brevo and Kit are the most economical.

Klaviyo is the e-commerce specialist, with deep Shopify integration, behavioral segmentation and revenue attribution built for online stores. For general small-business marketing, Brevo or ActiveCampaign are better all-rounders.

The top reason is contact-based pricing that balloons as your list grows — sometimes counting inactive or unsubscribed contacts — plus repeated price increases, feature gating into higher tiers, and a free plan that was cut back.
